Born on May 14, 1987, in Topeka, Derek grew up surrounded by love and family, including his parents, Craig A. and Jayme L. McKinney, and his two older sisters, Dara (Myers) and Dawn (Membrino). He was a natural leader and known for his incredible sense of humor, making anyone in his presence feel comfortable and seen.

Derek was a graduate of Shawnee Heights High School, class of 2006, where he led the drumline and formed lasting friendships. After attending Washburn University for a year, Derek transferred to Kansas State University, where he became a proud member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity. His time at K-State provided him with invaluable experiences and skills that opened doors to successful professional opportunities.

A Life of Adventure and Connection

Derek’s adventurous spirit led him to pursue extraordinary experiences, including skydiving, parasailing in the Alps, climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, and exploring Europe. Known for his outgoing nature, he wasn’t shy about striking up a conversation with celebrities or sharing a drink with new friends. His charisma and fearless approach to life left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Family and Legacy

Derek is survived by his parents, Craig and Jayme McKinney; his sisters, Dara (Bradon) Myers of Wichita, Kansas, and Dawn (Kenny) Membrino of Topeka; his beloved nieces and nephews, Grant and Portia Myers, and Gauge and Bailey Membrino; as well as his maternal grandfather, Dewey (Marylie) Brubaker of Topeka. He will also be remembered by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends who cherished his friendship.

Derek was preceded in death by his grandmother Barbara Brubaker, great-grandparents Irene Lamond, Dorothy Neal, Matilda (Dot) Brubaker, great-aunt and uncle Harlan and Ruth Johnson, and his loyal dog, Bear.

Funeral Services

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Topeka Bible Church, located at 1101 SW Mulvane St. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Following the service, cremation will take place, and Derek’s ashes will be privately interred at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Derek McKinney’s adventurous spirit, boundless generosity, and ability to light up a room will live on in the hearts of his loved ones. He will be dearly missed, but his legacy of friendship and love will never be forgotten.
